TAXI DRIVER DEMOGRAPHICS: Only 8% of New York City taxi and for-hire drivers were born in the United States. The majority are poorer immigrants from Bangladesh (23%), Pakistan, Greece, countries in Africa, Haiti, and Egypt. Riders tend to be young, male and affluent: 70% who are 35 and younger, over 40% making over $100K.
The scarcity of American-born drivers seems to have bound some together. “I looked over, and there was a white guy,” Mr. Abrahams said. “We both burst out laughing. He said, ‘I always tell my fares that there’s one other white guy in the city. I found him.’ ”
